The Angel of Remembrance
Performance of musical theatre on the Holocaust
In partnership with the Studio Pro Forma, history and memory |
This performance has been developed on the basis of an idea of Giambattista Giocoli’s, who is its musical interpreter; it has been conceived as a reflection on the criminal aberration of the deportations and of the nazi concentration camps; a harrowing yet never rhetorical memory, of all of the victims of nazi-fascism.
During the winter of 1940 the French composer Olivier Messiaen was imprisoned in the German camp of Stalag VIIIA, in the Saxon area; he wasn’t the only musician an this encouraged him to compose a piece for the performers who lived with him.
On the basis of that music, Valentino Corvino, Andrea Agostini e Giambattista Giocoli have created a new multimedia score for clarinet and electronics upon which the director Massimo Sceusa and the interpreter Mirko Rizzotto have developed a dramaturgy, certainly aimed at describing the pain, the torment but also the irony and the lightness of certain moments, undoubtedly experienced with unusual intensity, in the unexpected consciousness of the value that life holds.
